Get to know the Castlight Interns: Jake Gilger

We are more than halfway through our summer series and we will continue with the second of our 3 Engineering interns, Jake Gilger! Jake is known for his ability to create elaborate lunches out of Castlight kitchen snacks. Let’s learn more about his summer experience!

Tell us a little bit about yourself…

My name is Jake Gilger and I am entering my senior year at UC Berkeley as a Computer Science major. When I wasn’t hard at work at Castlight, I spent the summer binge-watching Game of Thrones. I also enjoy going to the gym, playing guitar, and coming up with new ideas. I like to think of myself as a visionary: in an effort to save money, I proposed a strategy to my fellow interns about the fictitious possibility of living in the office full-time (none of them caught my vision this time, but maybe someday…).

What have you gotten out of your experience with Castlight this summer?

So much! Working on both the customer-facing and backend parts of one of our products has made me feel like a valuable part of the team that I came to know and love. They taught me much more than I could have learned on my own. I was able to solidify my web development skills and I would now classify web development as my biggest strength in programming.

Castlight’s culture was also a big deal to me. I loved working with such a funky and dedicated group of people that kept me laughing while we accomplished a lot of work.

How would you break down your role at Castlight for a non-tech savvy pal?

I work on building parts of the website and the mobile app then try to make them work correctly.

What advice would you give to someone looking to intern in the health tech space?

Absorb as much as you can, apply what you know, and don’t be afraid to bring new ideas to the table.

If you were a Disney character, what animal sidekick would you choose and why?

“Shrek” is not a Disney movie but I choose Donkey because waffles in the morning sound delicious.
