Lost sleep adds up to high costs for employers

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), more than a third of Americans do not get enough sleep. This statistic is not surprising — we’ve all had sleepless periods due to increased stress or demands in our personal and professional lives. But when it becomes a habit, sleeping less than seven hours a night can add up to serious health risks, including increased risk of developing chronic conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. According to a new report from the RAND Corporation, sleep loss can add up to significant financial costs as well.

The research found that lack of sleep accounts for 1.2 million days of lost work per year, impacting companies’ bottom lines.

Nationally, up to 2.28 percent of the GDP, or $411 billion dollars, is lost each year due to sleep deprivation.

In addition to lost economic growth, the health risks associated with lost sleep can amount to higher healthcare costs.

Fortunately, digital therapeutics are entering the market that can help employees develop healthy sleep habits. For example, Castlight’s Jiff Enterprise Navigator partner Sleepio is a digital sleep improvement program that addresses poor sleep without medication. Sleepio uses proven Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (or CBT) techniques to offer digital sleep intervention. In addition, tools like Fitbit, Withings, and Jawbone can help manage sleep as part of a broader wellness program.

At Castlight, we recognize the value of employer-sponsored sleep management solutions in both improving employee health and wellbeing as well as reducing overall health care costs. The key to successfully integrating these tools in an employee population is engagement. Castlight’s Jiff enterprise benefits platform offers employees personalized recommendations that steer them to sleep tools that best fit their needs. In addition, the Jiff platform encourages employees to use those tools by offering incentives or challenges that motivate employees to better manage their sleep.

Jiff’s enterprise health benefits platform uses the powerful combination of real-time data, technology, incentives, and engagement best practices to make employee benefits, like digital therapeutics, more effective. Whether an employee is dozing off at their desk or discovers they are not getting enough sleep as a result of a wellness exam, the next step is finding the tools or solutions to help them improve sleep habits. With Castlight’s Jiff, employers can rest easy knowing they offer, connect, and motivate employees to engage in their own health, to improve sleep habits and, ultimately, reduce health care costs.
