Three best practices to managing chronic diseases and achieving a thriving workforce

American businesses lose billions of dollars in productivity every year to chronic conditions—anxiety and depression, back pain, and diabetes, to name a few. Even more concerning, most employees that have chronic conditions have more than one.

Chronic conditions also represent a disproportionate share of healthcare spending. In its 2012 healthcare spending report, which analyzed data from over 10,000 health plan members, the IMS Institute for Healthcare Informatics found that members with chronic conditions accounted for just over 66 percent of spending for all members.[1]

For employers, chronic conditions pose a tough set of problems in terms of controlling costs and improving outcomes. No formulas exist that guarantee success. Castlight recently hosted a webinar focused on chronic conditions.

This webinar offers three best practices for employers who want to take a more active role in shaping programs that deliver greater return on their healthcare spend while helping employees better manage chronic conditions. In addition, it describes the role technology can play in:

1. Helping employees and their families find what they need to know

2. Influencing the right care decisions at the time of need

3. Creating a healthcare consumer mindset
