Get to Know the Castlight Interns: John Filmanowicz

Thanks for tuning in for the next installment of “Get to Know the Interns!” Today, we focus our attention on John Filmanowicz! John is our User Experience intern and he has taken some time to give us a view into his life, both inside and outside of the office. Let’s check it out!

Tell us a little bit about yourself…

My name is John Filmanowicz, and I come from a suburb just outside of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I’m going into my senior year as a Computer Science student at Brown University in Providence. At school, I mostly study Human-Computer Interaction and Digital Art. When I’m not doing school things, I’m probably juggling, playing music, watching cartoons, or (these days) catching Pokemon.

What have you gotten out of your experience with Castlight this summer?

So much. The team I work with is very small but extremely diverse in areas of expertise. I’ve been really lucky to get to watch a lot of them, and they’ve been extremely helpful in aiding my progression as a designer. I’ve learned about some new design programs, color theory, typography, graphic design, best practices for web architecture, and much more. Being on a team that works pretty seamlessly across many different product groups has helped me learn how to effectively communicate decisions at every level of designing and developing software.

For me, this internship has given a professional context to everything I’ve learned up to this point, but had only practiced in theory. A great example of this would be conducting user testing. This was something I always knew would be important, but had never had the opportunity to do effectively or with tangible implications.

How would you break down your role at Castlight for a non-tech savvy pal?

“I help make our product pretty and easy to use.”

(Kind of how I would describe it to anyone, actually).

What advice would you give to someone looking to intern in the health tech space?

Health tech is a rapidly developing area in modern technology with the potential to help millions of people gain access to better care in the next few years, but the downside is around the world, we’re fighting against old and broken healthcare systems. There is a lot of need for problem solvers with a fresh perspective! My advice would be to keep your eyes and ears open for opportunities to make this process easier and better for everyone involved. Look for a company doing good things, like Castlight, and bring them your much-needed smarts and enthusiasm! Not to mention that San Francisco really has it all – a beautiful natural landscape, a thriving art scene, culture in droves, friendly people from all over the world, great food, style, energy… you name it, it’s probably here somewhere.

If you were a Disney character, what animal sidekick would you choose and why?

My childhood self would certainly go with Abu from Aladdin (because he’s the most loyal sidekick ever and rides a magic carpet).

But, I’m going to switch it up with a newer addition to this elite group: Baymax from Big Hero 6. Baymax is like a swiss-army-super-robot that’s personally invested in making his patient feel better. He has an enormous pool of useful knowledge, a warm and fluffy hug, and he can fly. Sorry Abu, still love you though.

Next intern up: Evan Doyle — a tech enthusiast and an expert skateboarder. See you then!
